A long week of love…

My son died one week from today, last Friday, January 9th, 2009.  He was an amazing boy, and I am so thankful for the five years that I have had with him!  God truly blessed us with a miraculous  precious gift.
He is so missed, and we are grateful for his love of God, and that he is not uncomfortable or in pain and is enjoying his time for eternity.  Caden loved to come down to my studio and ask for scraps to make sculptures of his own.  I will post some of these at a later date.  Make a Wish foundation sent us to Disney World after his second diagnosis of Neuroblastoma cancer.  While we were there we went to Sea World.  Noel and he loved Shamu and they both got a stuffed toy orca.  I saw that they had carved orca tails for sale, but we didn’t purchase any.  I carved these tails for the kids to remember their trip out of walnut wood for Christmas.  We loved that the tails were to remind the kids to believe and follow their dreams.  My brother, myself, Peter and Chad, my brother-in-laws carried his casket to the waiting grave.  At the graveside memorial for Caden I took some pictures with a friends camera of the casket with the angels at the corner and of the calalilies on top of the casket and the tree behind lit up by the late day sun that came out after our friend Tom prayed in his rememberance.  His body is resting in this beautiful spot nestled in the woods of the rolling hills of Kansas just a stones throw from my Great – Great Grandfathers Homestead foundation and well.  Caden’s story is one of courage, bravery, faith, joy and love.  Please read more here.   My wife wrote a striking and poignant poem that truly speaks to our Mr. C and his five wonderful years of life, from the day he was born May 5, 2003 during the tornado to the point when he was free last Friday, January 9, 2009.

Caden White Silicone Wrist Bands and other items for Christmas and support

My son Cadenrelapsed with Neuroblastoma cancer on November 7th, 2008,  and to help spread the word, support him and to let people know to be praying for him, I had some silicone wrist bands made that are made the same way as the Lance Armstrong blacelets.  All proceeds will go to his fund “The Caden White Irrevocable Trust”.  Purchase them here.  Also, I am offering “Tiny Mantel Clocks by Darin” for sale with the proceeds after cost going to his fund.  I will customize them as needed, with the price varying independent to what is required.  I have solid walnut wood, poplar wood and frosted acrylic with varying face styles.  Please contact me to discuss these further.  I will try and set up a PayPal setup for this as well.

clouds are easy to love

I am going to have a piece shown in a local show called “clouds are easy to love” as well as a piece shannon produced on site, as i was tacking mine to the ceiling. the concept is to have the interpretation of clouds on the ceiling as the other artists work about clouds is shown in the rest of the space. A few people involved in b.a.l.m. are going to have work shown on the ceiling at the Alley Gallery a Percolator Project during the new show.

KT, (who ran the Lawrence Social Service League Store when Brian and I started Cheeseball Clothing Company and was instrumental in providing our recycled pants for the TRI-COLORED PASTA’s, TWO TONES with RACING STRIPES, and was a great encouragement) is going to have the rooftop space for her cloud installation. She is a very enthusiastic caring women who is very involved in the Lawrence community.

Wood Carving Tools

Wood form in progress
Wood form in progress

I have been working on some wood carving lately. I found an amazing product that I just love. I like it so much that I got set up to sell the tools for them. The concept is a chainsaw or alternative blade or sander that fits onto MOST 4.5″ angle grinders. You can use one or two in a tandem setup. The names of the blades are based on King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.  I have a Lancelot/ Squire tandem setup. I have found it to be an excellent way to remove material quickly, but being able to stay in control of the tool. They have a variety of products that taper down from the chainsaw blades to varying levels of made for wood grinder wheels, sanding discs and more. They also have miniature versions that can be run on their own proprietary tool, or on a standard air or electric die grinder. Please let me know if you are interested in any of these products. I can show more images and give more information including pricing on almost any combination of kits or individual products.

Healing Series

Series from Fall 2007- Present – HEALING:

Introduction-
My son Caden White age four was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer (a nervous system cancer in children with around 600 diagnoses per year) June 28th, 2007.  He has been through six of the seven, three to four day chemo rounds, had a stem cell harvest, and had invasive surgery to remove the tumor.  In addition to this the doctors would like him to have a bone marrow transplant and eventually have radiation treatments, additional treatments, and then possibly antibody therapy.  He is currently showing no evidence of disease.  I had never had to deal with any healing issues, but this stirred within me a desire to release these thoughts and feelings that I have surrounding Caden’s health issues.  I feel like working through these ideas in my art has been very helpful to try and focus on the positive things rather on the negative.  I don’t want to downplaying the pain or gloss over heartache, but rather show it in the burning cleansing trial by fire which brings impurities to the surface, so that they can be removed, the poison and pain of medical treatments, all of which is overcome with seared wings of faith, sincere hope, truth, beauty and above all love.  I feel called as an artist to address ideas and truths through my artwork that calls from deep within me to deep within the viewer.

Waverly – DWR Champagne Chair Contest™ entry

I entered a contest called The annual DWR Champagne Chair Contest™.  I had a few hours to complete the piece because my son Caden, came down with a 104.8 fever that put us back in the hospital on Sunday.  I had done my design over a year before, but never started making the chair.  So instead of having some time on Sunday and Monday to work on the chair I was in the hospital.  Thankfully my son is doing much better!  I took a few tools with me to the hospital and got a very rough shape worked out there.  Shannon came to switch places with me at the hospital, I came back to work on some items and then worked on finishing the chair.  I was finishing gluing the chair (I am not a glue fan, I would have rather TIG welded it) I realized that I didn’t have a way to take a picture in time, so I emailed them what I had (not much).  I sent them the final photo today and offer it to you for your viewing pleasure.  Please note that as all of my images, designs, sculptures etc., are Copyrighted.  Written permission is required for any duplication.

Caden's Hope Sterling Necklace

Our friend Ann who produces a beautiful jewelery line, is offering a necklace especially for our son Caden as a way of helping out with his medical costs. This is an amazingly sweet gesture, and the jewelery is very well designed and made. I cannot thank Ann enough for her support in this way and the many other ways that she has helped us. Thank you Ann! Click on the above image or go to the page on her website for more information or click here.
