With excitement and terror, I hit the launch button on my Kickstarter project today at 5:02 pm!

Darin M. White, Overflow, Reclaimed wood, seeds, 2012

I am working towards a solo exhibition in Brooklyn, New York April 13-26th, 2012!
To be able to produce the large conceptual based installation and object artwork
that I make, as well as be in New York for 2-3 weeks during the exhibition, I am
looking to art and creative lovers and supporters (or just kind souls) to raise funds
to help make this project a reality.

THIS PROJECT WILL ONLY BE FUNDED IF AT LEAST $5,000 IS PLEDGED
BY SATURDAY APR 7, 5:02PM CDT.

I would be very grateful if you would help me with this project, by sharing by whatever method
you prefer (twitter, facebook, blogs, tumblelog, flickr, linkedin, myspace, phone, text, fax, mail, word of mouth etc).

Here is the direct link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/darinwhite/overflow-a-debut-new-york-solo-exhibition-of-conce
And the short link to this project is http://kck.st/yzR0G5 there is an embedded video, twitter share and shortlink at the above link as well.

By pledging $1 or more, Kickstarter will keep you updated on this project. Of course, if you
can pledge more there are some fabulous rewards! Please check out the link above and take a look.
If it is not too much to ask, I would appreciate you helping take this first day of school feeling out of my stomach!

Thank you in advance for your support. It is sincerely and truly appreciated!

Update on Kickstarter project launch

I recently announced that I was approved for a Kickstarter project for my debut solo exhibition in New York.

Here are some updates in regards to launching the Kickstarter. I am adding images that I will use in the
project launch. Please stay tuned for the actual launch and details! Thank you!

Here are some highlights of rewards for funding this Kickstarter project…

Corn Seed Packets

As part of the Overflow site specific installation, there will be empty seed packets printed on the front with
image of the work and the back will have information about the work the exhibition and sponsor. Below is
concept images of the front and back of seed packet. I foresee the empty seed packets being mailed out as
postcards announcing the exhibition, and inviting the viewer to come see the show and take a few seeds.
This will also be a reward for pledging on Kickstarter.

These seed packets will also be at the gallery and available to use to pick up a few seeds from the exhibition.

Bear Heart T-Shirt

I have had requests to make T-Shirts of my work in the past, but never had the right opportunity. My brother
and I used to own a clothing company, and screened many shirts in my day! The Winged Wonder was one
of my designs. I should dig one up sometime and show you. hmmm

Darin M. White, Concept image for Bear Heart Sketch T-Shirt

I surveyed a few people and they seem to think that a simplified version of the actual Bear Heart
concept image was preferred to the simple line drawing above. Here is what it will probably look
like.

Here is what the Bear Heart will look like on a t-shirt. Most likely soft ringspun, per Lisa Lala’s request.
They will come in a variety of colors. It is a fun grab bag.

Exhibition Catalog

I have been waiting for a while to print a catalog of my work, and now it is time!
This catalog will most likely be a softcover, saddle stitched, unless I go beyond funding a way!
Below is my concept image.

Pencil Drawings

Below are a couple of pencil drawings of the Appropriate Attire works. I am thinking about including a print
of these for one of the rewards.

Change Forward Conceptual Rendering

There are a number of renderings I am going to offer as various sizes and levels of prints. Here is one…

Darin M. White, Change Forward Conceptual Image, 2011

Surprise Quick Sketch

One of the rewards I am going to offer is a quick sketch of whatever is
on my mind at the moment (I know scary thought), but hopefully interesting.
It might be a cartoon, or naturalistic sketch, stylized, etc. Surprise!

Arrow Antler T-Shirt or Sketch

Below is another ink drawing that I am considering offering as a T-Shirt
or sketch reward. What do you think? It would probably be printed on a random colored shirt.

Overflow Card Concept Image

Another option for cards is the “Bear Heart” image:

Of course my family is putting up with me, with all of the work I am putting into this project

I am so thankful for them! Here is a photo from Fall 2011.

Brooklyn Solo Exhibition April 13-26th, 2012

I have a solo exhibition April 13-26th, 2012 at the Soapbox Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. I am very excited about this project.

As an artist and arts advocate my wife and I help produce and curate art exhibitions, provide opportunities and encourage artists through b.a.l.m. | beauty, art and life movement. I was offered a personal solo art show at an alternative gallery space in Brooklyn, NY from April 13-26, 2012. The space is all that is provided, and the artist acts as the janitor, gallerist, host and receptionist. To be able to produce the large conceptual based installation and object artwork that I make, as well as be in New York for 2-3 weeks during the exhibition, I am looking to raise funds to help make this project a reality. If more funds are raised than required for the project, any extra will go to producing and printing catalogs of the exhibit. I am hoping to pre-sell work for the exhibition. Below are some conceptual images and renderings that show what I am producing. If you are interested, or know of someone who would be interested in this work, please contact me to discuss. Please help me get out the word about this project! Thank you!

Darin M. White, Bear Heart, Taxidermy Bear, 2012

Bear Heart

A naturally peaceful bear protrudes from the wall with arms extended in a kind gesture, paws touching.
The negative shape of the arms creates a simple but powerful message, and encourages the viewer to wrestle with larger issues of life.

Darin M. White, Overflow, Reclaimed wood, seeds, 2012

Overflow conjures thoughts of farmland, barns and brimming silos. Seeds are important and are traded as a
commodity. Cycles of life happen whether we understand the process or choose to bury our head. Our land,
resources and life are laid out in front of us, one moment at a time. What will we do with what we are given?

Darin M. White, Appropriate Attire: Burlap and Earth (left) and Appropriate Attire: Burlap and Ashes (right), Transfer print on copper, 2012

Darin M. White, Appropriate Attire: Burlap and Earth, Transfer print on copper, 2012

A men’s suit made from the same material to hold potatoes or coffee is buried to its knees in soil. Out of the
earth emerges a single seedling. Appropriate Attire: Burlap and Earth wrestles with issues of power and
humility, struggle, toil, life cycle, memento mori, forward movement and growth.

Darin M. White, Appropriate Attire: Ashes and Burlap, Transfer print on copper, 2012

Appropriate Attire:Burlap and Ashes

A burlap sack becomes a women’s dress that either is rising out of or sinking into ashes which create the
outline. From the ashes, new growth begins to form. In nature when fire burns the forest decimating it,
eventually out of this process emerges life and the chance to begin again.

A long week of love…

My son died one week from today, last Friday, January 9th, 2009.  He was an amazing boy, and I am so thankful for the five years that I have had with him!  God truly blessed us with a miraculous  precious gift.
He is so missed, and we are grateful for his love of God, and that he is not uncomfortable or in pain and is enjoying his time for eternity.  Caden loved to come down to my studio and ask for scraps to make sculptures of his own.  I will post some of these at a later date.  Make a Wish foundation sent us to Disney World after his second diagnosis of Neuroblastoma cancer.  While we were there we went to Sea World.  Noel and he loved Shamu and they both got a stuffed toy orca.  I saw that they had carved orca tails for sale, but we didn’t purchase any.  I carved these tails for the kids to remember their trip out of walnut wood for Christmas.  We loved that the tails were to remind the kids to believe and follow their dreams.  My brother, myself, Peter and Chad, my brother-in-laws carried his casket to the waiting grave.  At the graveside memorial for Caden I took some pictures with a friends camera of the casket with the angels at the corner and of the calalilies on top of the casket and the tree behind lit up by the late day sun that came out after our friend Tom prayed in his rememberance.  His body is resting in this beautiful spot nestled in the woods of the rolling hills of Kansas just a stones throw from my Great – Great Grandfathers Homestead foundation and well.  Caden’s story is one of courage, bravery, faith, joy and love.  Please read more here.   My wife wrote a striking and poignant poem that truly speaks to our Mr. C and his five wonderful years of life, from the day he was born May 5, 2003 during the tornado to the point when he was free last Friday, January 9, 2009.

clouds are easy to love

I am going to have a piece shown in a local show called “clouds are easy to love” as well as a piece shannon produced on site, as i was tacking mine to the ceiling. the concept is to have the interpretation of clouds on the ceiling as the other artists work about clouds is shown in the rest of the space. A few people involved in b.a.l.m. are going to have work shown on the ceiling at the Alley Gallery a Percolator Project during the new show.

KT, (who ran the Lawrence Social Service League Store when Brian and I started Cheeseball Clothing Company and was instrumental in providing our recycled pants for the TRI-COLORED PASTA’s, TWO TONES with RACING STRIPES, and was a great encouragement) is going to have the rooftop space for her cloud installation. She is a very enthusiastic caring women who is very involved in the Lawrence community.

Wood Carving Tools

Wood form in progress
Wood form in progress

I have been working on some wood carving lately. I found an amazing product that I just love. I like it so much that I got set up to sell the tools for them. The concept is a chainsaw or alternative blade or sander that fits onto MOST 4.5″ angle grinders. You can use one or two in a tandem setup. The names of the blades are based on King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.  I have a Lancelot/ Squire tandem setup. I have found it to be an excellent way to remove material quickly, but being able to stay in control of the tool. They have a variety of products that taper down from the chainsaw blades to varying levels of made for wood grinder wheels, sanding discs and more. They also have miniature versions that can be run on their own proprietary tool, or on a standard air or electric die grinder. Please let me know if you are interested in any of these products. I can show more images and give more information including pricing on almost any combination of kits or individual products.

Healing Series

Series from Fall 2007- Present – HEALING:

Introduction-
My son Caden White age four was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer (a nervous system cancer in children with around 600 diagnoses per year) June 28th, 2007.  He has been through six of the seven, three to four day chemo rounds, had a stem cell harvest, and had invasive surgery to remove the tumor.  In addition to this the doctors would like him to have a bone marrow transplant and eventually have radiation treatments, additional treatments, and then possibly antibody therapy.  He is currently showing no evidence of disease.  I had never had to deal with any healing issues, but this stirred within me a desire to release these thoughts and feelings that I have surrounding Caden’s health issues.  I feel like working through these ideas in my art has been very helpful to try and focus on the positive things rather on the negative.  I don’t want to downplaying the pain or gloss over heartache, but rather show it in the burning cleansing trial by fire which brings impurities to the surface, so that they can be removed, the poison and pain of medical treatments, all of which is overcome with seared wings of faith, sincere hope, truth, beauty and above all love.  I feel called as an artist to address ideas and truths through my artwork that calls from deep within me to deep within the viewer.
