Interesting projects… though it is somewhat hard to appreciate them fully. The surrounding white space seems to wash out/ over power the details. What is the inspiration for this project?

What material in the sculpture on the left, what kind of wood?

the object on the left is a mantle or fireplace piece that was cut with a chainsaw from a fallen tree in the woods and then drilled and stained. it was a gift for my wife on valentines day a few years ago. the object on the right is a turkey box call made out of poplar and walnut wood with wood burning. i love to hunt anything, but turkey’s are truly enjoyable to call and hunt, and this was my way of combining art, woodworking and hunting.

paul, i think the wood is probably elm as it was a hardwood and fairly non-descript. i am a little embarrassed that i don’t know. my brother lives in cedar house that is placed into a space cut into the woods and so i have plenty of fallen trees available. i didn’t take the time to identify it, but this is my best guess. it wasn’t, oak, poplar or maple for sure. i don’t even remember what the bark was like, as made this around 4 or 5 years ago. i mixed some dark stains to get the dark brown finish that is shown. how is your sculpting going? blesssings, darin
