GF Sam Wagner

An open memorial letter to my brother and dear artist friend: GF Sam Wagner

I sat behind Shelley Wagner during a English class where we read plays at KU in 1993. At the time she and Sam were dating. She had a cornerstone t-shirt on, and I asked her if she had been before. She said that her boyfriend Sam was a huge music fan. I told her I would love to meet him sometime. Eventually we did, and Sam, Shelley, and my wife Shannon and I would hang out on numerous occasions. They came to Shannon and my wedding, and gave us some awesome artist made coffee mugs that we still have to this day (and is still one of our favorites to sip the black juice out of).

Sam and Shelley got married a few years after us, and when they moved to Kansas City we didn’t get together as often because life has a tendency to keep you busy. We both bought houses, had kids and settled into life. Sam always loved the music, and would quote lyrics and spout inside knowledge of what was going on in his particular genre of interest at the time. My brother Brian and he could dialog back and forth for hours, and I just enjoyed the conversation. The three of us threw some straight edge raves together to. But, Sam had another passion besides his love of architecture and music. Art. He loved to produce art. If he had a few moments to spare, especially at night, he would go downstairs and make art. He loved to discuss art and talk about techniques and ideas. Shelley and Sam were both involved with b.a.l.m. | beauty art and life movement gatherings from the beginning.

Over the last few years I was excited to be able to include GF Sam Wagner or GF Wagner (his art pseudonym, Galen Forrest [Sam] Wagner) into various art exhibitions that b.a.l.m. produced or curated. In 2009, he was in the b.a.l.m. WHITE SHOW, in Lawrence, Kansas and also the second version in San Antonio, Texas. He had produced a series of white or mostly white works for the exhibition. The series was “Little Things I Should Have Said and Done”. They are poignant, stark, melancholy works. Two works not in this series were included in the exhibition; “Geese”, and “Discover and Enjoy”. He sold both paintings! In 2010, he was in Anthropoi which he showed a 36″ x 36″ piece, “Mourning into Dancing” with three girl/women dancing which included digital pixel concept, at the 739 Mass Street Flash Space. At this space he was also in the Dry Bones exhibition. Shannon and I bought his painting Awakening (Melancholy Ghost), a memento mori work with a young boy holding a skull and he had another offer to have it purchased as well from a couple from Tulsa, Oklahoma. This couple was trying to have Sam make another version of this piece when he passed away. For Shannon and I the boy reminded us of our son Caden, and we loved the way he handled the cut paper as the medium.

We also bought another work of his, at an exhibition of works completed over a years time. In 2011 I jurored an exhibition in Des Moines, IA for the Hillyard Company, and he was included with a clever duo; “A Portrait of a Mop“, and “A Portrait of a Broom”.

In 2012 b.a.l.m. co-produced and curated an exhibition at the Lawrence Arts Center called DANNON art project, where the artist worked in the space as a studio, performance and exhibition all at the same time. He came to the first reception when it opened and we all went out for an after party at Burger Stand as a large group. We had a great time hanging out and making art. He postponed his time slot a couple of times so that he could help Shelley with a project, or help coach soccer for his boys. That was the kind of man he was, giving, loving, caring and creative beyond belief.

We got together again for lunch at PepperJax Grill at one point during a lunch break, he ran over to Lawrence to drop off some artwork. This was the last time I saw Sam. I spoke to him on the phone a few weeks ago when he was in the hospital. He was short on breathe, but in great spirits. He was a positive man, always looking for the good things in life, despite his situation. This is the Sam I will remember. The high energy, smiling, laughing, talking, loving man, that would put a smile on your face and illicit excitement with his infectious creativity, ideas and thoughts. Sam passed away on July 5th, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts after being diagnosed with Mesothelioma cancer only a couple of months before. I for one am so thankful for the time I knew him. I will miss you GF Sam Wagner. Yours was a life to be lived and remembered!

I was honored and humbled to receive a call from Shelley and asked to be a pall bearer for Sam’s Funeral. Here is his obituary: http://www.tributes.com/show/GF-Sam-Wagner-94077810

Update on Kickstarter project launch

I recently announced that I was approved for a Kickstarter project for my debut solo exhibition in New York.

Here are some updates in regards to launching the Kickstarter. I am adding images that I will use in the
project launch. Please stay tuned for the actual launch and details! Thank you!

Here are some highlights of rewards for funding this Kickstarter project…

Corn Seed Packets

As part of the Overflow site specific installation, there will be empty seed packets printed on the front with
image of the work and the back will have information about the work the exhibition and sponsor. Below is
concept images of the front and back of seed packet. I foresee the empty seed packets being mailed out as
postcards announcing the exhibition, and inviting the viewer to come see the show and take a few seeds.
This will also be a reward for pledging on Kickstarter.

These seed packets will also be at the gallery and available to use to pick up a few seeds from the exhibition.

Bear Heart T-Shirt

I have had requests to make T-Shirts of my work in the past, but never had the right opportunity. My brother
and I used to own a clothing company, and screened many shirts in my day! The Winged Wonder was one
of my designs. I should dig one up sometime and show you. hmmm

Darin M. White, Concept image for Bear Heart Sketch T-Shirt

I surveyed a few people and they seem to think that a simplified version of the actual Bear Heart
concept image was preferred to the simple line drawing above. Here is what it will probably look
like.

Here is what the Bear Heart will look like on a t-shirt. Most likely soft ringspun, per Lisa Lala’s request.
They will come in a variety of colors. It is a fun grab bag.

Exhibition Catalog

I have been waiting for a while to print a catalog of my work, and now it is time!
This catalog will most likely be a softcover, saddle stitched, unless I go beyond funding a way!
Below is my concept image.

Pencil Drawings

Below are a couple of pencil drawings of the Appropriate Attire works. I am thinking about including a print
of these for one of the rewards.

Change Forward Conceptual Rendering

There are a number of renderings I am going to offer as various sizes and levels of prints. Here is one…

Surprise Quick Sketch

One of the rewards I am going to offer is a quick sketch of whatever is
on my mind at the moment (I know scary thought), but hopefully interesting.
It might be a cartoon, or naturalistic sketch, stylized, etc. Surprise!

Arrow Antler T-Shirt or Sketch

Below is another ink drawing that I am considering offering as a T-Shirt
or sketch reward. What do you think? It would probably be printed on a random colored shirt.

Another option for cards is the “Bear Heart” image:

Of course my family is putting up with me, with all of the work I am putting into this project

I am so thankful for them! Here is a photo from Fall 2011.

Healing Series

Series from Fall 2007- Present – HEALING:

Introduction-
My son Caden White age four was diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer (a nervous system cancer in children with around 600 diagnoses per year) June 28th, 2007.  He has been through six of the seven, three to four day chemo rounds, had a stem cell harvest, and had invasive surgery to remove the tumor.  In addition to this the doctors would like him to have a bone marrow transplant and eventually have radiation treatments, additional treatments, and then possibly antibody therapy.  He is currently showing no evidence of disease.  I had never had to deal with any healing issues, but this stirred within me a desire to release these thoughts and feelings that I have surrounding Caden’s health issues.  I feel like working through these ideas in my art has been very helpful to try and focus on the positive things rather on the negative.  I don’t want to downplaying the pain or gloss over heartache, but rather show it in the burning cleansing trial by fire which brings impurities to the surface, so that they can be removed, the poison and pain of medical treatments, all of which is overcome with seared wings of faith, sincere hope, truth, beauty and above all love.  I feel called as an artist to address ideas and truths through my artwork that calls from deep within me to deep within the viewer.

Caden White – Hope Necklace

Since it is near Christmas time, and we have had multiple requests for Caden’s Hope Necklace information again, I am reposting this previous post.

We had an article written up in the Lawrence Journal World about Ann selling these at the recent Lawrence Art Center Holiday Art Fair.

Below is the original post:

Caden's Hope Sterling Necklace

Our friend Ann who produces a beautiful jewelery line, is offering a necklace especially for our son Caden as a way of helping out with his medical costs. This is an amazingly sweet gesture, and the jewelery is very well designed and made. I cannot thank Ann enough for her support in this way and the many other ways that she has helped us. Thank you Ann! Click on the above image or go to the page on her website for more information or click here.

Destination Postcard Show Opening on 11/16/07 from 5-8pm

b.a.l.m, the arts group that Shannon and I facilitate is having an art show called “Destination Postcards” in the Holiday Art Show at the Art Affair Gallery in Baldwin, KS.  The show opening reception is Friday November 16, 2007 from 5-8 pm.  B.a.l.m’s part in the show is from a gathering we had at the end of March, 2007.  I am sure there will be some type of o’rderves and drink. This is your invitation, use it wisely.  I produced two photocopy transfers on copper.  One which is called:

“Destination: Healing”  with three cropped images of my son Caden’s head in varying positions dealing with issues surrounding his fight with neuroblastoma cancer.

Caden In Three

The other transfer print is also on copper and is called:“Destination: Life” which there are miniature images of self portrait drawings that I have produced over the years.
