Kickstarter Update #7: Long Overdue Update – 40% Goal Hit and Surpassed!

I have a little explaining to do.

I have been buried trying to get my printing, t-shirts and details (finding whole corn in Brooklyn is a very difficult task let me assure you) together for this exhibition. To top it off, I was in bed most of the day feeling miserable. My wife said something about me working on this project too much. ūüôā I am little bit behind on updating. I have been blown away with the pledges! Thank you so much for your support! We hit the next… (read more here…)

I know that many people wait till the last minute to pledge. Ok people(read more here…)

I want to point out a few rewards that haven’t been taken advantage of yet.
This first one below would really help get us going to meet this pledge goal.
$400 – SIGNED AND NUMBERED 1/1 SPALTED MAPLE SCULPTURE AND NAME AND WORK IN EXHIBITION CATALOG AND INCLUDES AN EXHIBITION CATALOG – I will sculpt a good sized chunk of this spalted maple into a simple form w/ exotic wood base & steel support. The sculpture can be removed from base mount. Each is original! One of the SCULPTURES in the Exhibition Catalog, YOUR NAME IN CATALOG & on WEBSITE. Also of course, I will include the EXHIBITION CATALOG, send a BEAUTIFUL EXHIBITION GREETING CARD with MY SINCERE THANKS, POSTCARD & SEED PACKET. This is a LIMITED REWARD, don’t let it get away! See example below.

Darin M. White sculpture Two, One, Carved Spalted Maple, Cocobolo Wood, Steel, 2011, Private Collection

If the above is a little bit more than you are able to handle, how about this one:
$300- YOUR CHOICE OF ONE ORIGINAL TRANSFER PRINT ON COPPER PLATE, CUSTOM FRAMED IN SOLID MAPLE BY ARTIST WHICH WILL BE INCLUDED IN THE SOLO EXHIBITION AND EXHIBITION CATALOG – PRE-PURCHASE one of the WORKS from this solo exhibition! Your choice of ONE of ONLY TWO WORKS AVAILABLE! “APPROPRIATE ATTIRE: EARTH AND BURLAP” or “APPROPRIATE ATTIRE: BURLAP AND ASHES”. (See image of both to the left). It is a fraternal twin, sponsor both for $300 each and you have the pair! Also included is the EXHIBITION CATALOG, an IMAGE OF THIS WORK in the Exhibition Catalog, YOUR NAME ON WEBSITE and in the CATALOG, a HANDWRITTEN NOTE GREETING CARD with MY THANKS, the POSTCARD, & SEED PACKET.

My image of the copper works aren’t a very good, so I included one of the works below not show on copper, so you can see the details.

Darin M. White, Appropriate Attire: Earth and Burlap, Pencil on paper, 2012

Apparently there aren’t very many people who like to be surprised out there!? No, I don’t believe it! Here is a great reward that no one has jumped off a cliff for…yet! I included another drawing example below, so if this helps.

SURPRISE QUICK SKETCH AND EXHIBITION CATALOG- For you gamblers and lovers of the thrill! A DRAWING that I make up on the spot. It will look like one of my sketch book drawings, could be pen or pencil depending on my mood. Or, I may pull out a work (print or drawing) FROM MY FLAT FILES! Also you get the EXHIBITION CATALOG, PERSONAL THANKS, GREETING CARD, POSTCARD, SEED PACKET & NAME ON SITE.

Darin M. White, Arrow Antler, Ink on paper, 2012

Ok, last one to highlight. This one a couple of you have pledged for this one. I have had great responses to these works. Each one is different, and made with solid beautiful spalted maple wood.

SPALTED MAPLE WEARABLE SCULPTURE – If you are unsure what spalted maple is see the image and description area. After sculpting, it is connected to a silver chain or a leather necklace adding the “wearable” part to “sculpture”. So, you get the SPALTED MAPLE WEARABLE SCULPTURE, plus a NOTE OF THANKS ON GREETING CARD, POSTCARD, SEED PACKET & NAME ON SITE. This willwork for either sex. The one show below is on a different chain than what will be provided, unless it is what you would prefer. This is again, just an example as this is my wife’s, and she refuses to let this one go. You however can specify rough idea of shape and size. The one below is an extra large showpiece, but some prefer a smaller scale. Want to see other examples? Click here.

Ok, that wraps up this long update…Go forth and support creativity!

Nacho Libre: A film of Hope

I wrote this “review” a while ago and decided to finally post.

Image ©2006 Paramount Pictures

I was watching a “classic” movie Nacho Libre last night Produced by¬†Jack Black, Directed by Jared Hess written by Jared Hess, Jerusha Hess and Mike White. I have fond memories of watching this movie with my son Caden in the hospital or at home as he was recovering from his chemotherapy’s. Nacho Libre at first seems to be just another fun shallow comedy with Jack Black (Nacho). I loved the cinematography, the fun accents and the kitschy feel. There is this gorgeous aqua blue and cadmium red throughout the film. It makes me wish I was painting again. Last night something made me love this flick even more.

This revelation hits me while the frames are rolling. This is a movie about hope! In all its hyped up silliness the movie is about hope, and it is beautiful. Yes, even proudly I say it; “Nacho Libre is a stunning film!”

The basic plot is about a child who grows up in an orphanage. His mother was a Protestant missionary to Mexico and his father was a Catholic Priest who besides trying convert each other manage to have a son before they both die. Nacho their son is raised in a Catholic orphanage. The credits roll as he tries to act like a luchadore and is humiliated once he has been caught by the priests. As he grows he cannot stop thinking about finding his place in the world and his passion for Mexican wrestling. He draws sketches of his costume if he was a wrestler during mass. Eventually he meets a homeless person (Esqueleto played by H√©ctor Jim√©nez) in the alley trying to steel the orphans chips, and he fights him for the bag. With the recent arrival to the orphanage of Encarnaci√≥n the peaceful, beautiful sister and the harassment by the other brothers for his lack of cooking skills, Nacho decides to act on his dream of Lucha libre. He finds Esqueleto the chip thief and gets him to agree to team up with him in the ring. They lose badly, but make some money and they are hooked. Nacho brings back a salad for orphans to their delight. Eventually, Nacho wants to become more and more like the professional luchadores. He is hiding his identity and sneaking out late to wrestle. His joy turns to frustration as he is starting to slip in his help for the orphans. An opportunity comes up that the winner of many wrestlers would fight Rames (Cesar Gonzalez) the best luchador and would become a professional wrestler and win a substantial amount of money. When he asks Sister Encarnaci√≥n (Ana de la Reguera) what she thinks he should do, she says that God would honor a person if they were doing something for the right reason. Nacho is shown praying at the front of the chapel. He prays that if God will only let him win this match, that he will give any money he wins to help the orphans. As he is praying the candles catch his robe on fire. He runs out of the church screaming and his clothes on fire. He rolls to put out the flames. When he stands up, his simple brown tunic has been burned off the bottom half of him revealing his colorful aqua and red “stretchy pants” that he wears to wrestle. Everyone is shocked by this site and Nacho claims that he is “Nacho the luchadore”. The anger from the brothers come in claims of sin with icy stares. Nacho states that he will go and he will fight and he will win, because God is with him in the ring. He states that when he wins he will by a bus for the orphans, so they can go on field trips and “stuff”. He gallops off to fight and comes home dejected from being the runner up to the winner the Emperor. He is kicked out of the orphanage, and as he is about to leave his small friend Chancho (Darius Rose) asks him where he will go. Nacho says he doesn’t know as there is no place for him at the orphanage and there is no place for him in the world. Chancho gives him a machette to help Nacho as he goes into the wilderness. After a short time, Esqueleto comes to give him a message that the Emperor has been injured and cannot fight Ramses. Nacho decides to come out of retirement to wrestle. Esqueleto has asked Nacho before, “Do you think we’ll win?”
Nacho replied, “I do not know, but I hope so.” He is very nervous about fighting Ramses and does his best, but he is loosing badly and it looks to be over for Nacho as Sister Encarnaci√≥n and the masked orphans walk into the stadium. Nacho’s hope is restored, and his faith and courage return. He begins to subdue Ramses as the slow motion continues, he wins with an aerial swan leap from the ropes to the retreating luchador and a three second pin.

The orphans bus is decked out in bright luchador paintings as it travels down the road. Out the door of the bus Nacho the aqua clothed luchador priest, Sister Encarnación and the orphans proceed up the steps of their next tour destination.

A long week of love…

My son died one week from today, last Friday, January 9th, 2009.  He was an amazing boy, and I am so thankful for the five years that I have had with him!  God truly blessed us with a miraculous  precious gift.
He is so missed, and we are grateful for his love of God, and that he is not uncomfortable or in pain and is enjoying his time for eternity.¬† Caden loved to come down to my studio and ask for scraps to make sculptures of his own.¬† I will post some of these at a later date.¬† Make a¬†Wish foundation sent¬†us to Disney World after his second diagnosis of Neuroblastoma cancer.¬† While we were there we went to Sea World.¬† Noel and he loved Shamu and they both got a stuffed¬†toy orca.¬† I saw that they had carved¬†orca tails for sale, but we didn’t purchase any.¬† I carved these tails for the kids¬†to remember their trip out of walnut wood for Christmas.¬†¬†We loved that the tails were to remind the kids to believe and follow their dreams.¬† My brother, myself, Peter and Chad, my brother-in-laws carried his casket to the waiting grave.¬† At the¬†graveside memorial for¬†Caden I¬†took some pictures with a friends camera of the casket with the angels¬†at the corner and¬†of the¬†calalilies on top of the casket and the tree behind lit up by the late day sun that came out after our friend Tom prayed in his rememberance.¬† His body is resting in this beautiful spot nestled in the woods of¬†the rolling hills of Kansas just a stones throw from my Great – Great Grandfathers Homestead¬†foundation and well.¬†¬†Caden’s story is one of courage, bravery, faith, joy and love.¬† Please read more here.¬†¬† My wife wrote a striking and poignant poem that truly speaks to our Mr. C and his five wonderful years of life, from the day he was born¬†May 5, 2003 during the tornado to the point when he was free last Friday, January 9, 2009.
